Functional Resume Format
Is the Functional Format Right for You?
The functional resume format combines accomplishments, qualifications and experience to target specific job requirements. For many people the chronological resume is simply unworkable. Career changes, gaps in employment, job hopping...stick out like a sore thumb in chronological form. It paints a picture of a twisting, turning unfocused career unlikely to impress any employer. This format is flexible, allowing you to be creative in getting the employers attention and stand out from the competition. The functional resume smooths out the rough spots by highlighting experience and downplaying dates, including age. Some career experts and employers do not favor this form, not surprising considering it is harder to read and makes it harder to compare candidates. There are many good reasons to use this layout, most notably the ability to highlight your strengths and let your personality shine through. When to use a Functional Resume: - If you have gaps in your employment history
- If you have changed jobs many times
- If you have changed industries
- If you have been self employed
- If you are returning to work after a prolonged period
- If you feel your age is a factor
- If you recently graduated with little or no experience
- If you have volunteer experience
Advantages: - It highlights skills and accomplishments
- Flexability to emphasize your strengths
- Creativity to display individuality
- Ability to highlight volunteer work
- Ability to highlight skills gained from outside activities
Disadvantages: - Does not highlight education
- Does not highlight employment with industry leaders
- Downplays a progressive employment history
